This book came to me on a day when I needed something simple, entertaining and positive to read. The fact that it was written by my good friend Norman Cantor certainly had something to do with my reading the first few pages. The fact that I stayed glued to the story for an entire afternoon probably speaks more to the fact that, contained within this little gem of a story, is all most people will need to do to refresh themselves on the elements of creating a successful life. And it is here that I depart from the book itself to talk about the author.
Norman Cantor, for me, is a definition of friendship. And friendship is not a word I use lightly. In fact, it is a word by which I have come to use as a very real benchmark for true spirituality. Not conceptual, not simply driven by good intentions, but the very essence of woo-wishing from one soul to another. The very thing that so painfully eludes us in our current rush to memorialize our opinions on social media, our efforts to disguise aggression and anger as intellect, and our woefully mistaken self-centeredness cloaked in quasi-ancient borrowed spiritual ritual and practice.
As Rodney King so eloquently said "Can't we all just be friends?"
Norman's book goes to the core of this journey, from anger and resignation so often absorbed though our early childhood experiences, through the challenges of relationship issues, to the growing awareness of a deep malaise and awareness that THERE MUST BE A BETTER WAY! With his first wife's painful death experience as a final catalyst, Norman begins the Hero's Journey of self-actualization, taking us through many of his stepping-stones to higher consciousness. In doing so, there is no hint of the preacher, no sense of "this is what YOU need to do," but simply a simple story of a man's search and gradual mastery of tools that allow him to CREATE instead of HATE. And this is a message which sorely needs to be heard - and not just from one person but from us all. And I believe that is the magic in this book; it encourages us to dig deeper into ourselves and live more fully our OWN lives, knowing fully well that we will make mistakes and fall down and scrape knees and then get back up and continue to dream.
